00:00
hi this is AJ and welcome back for
00:04
secret number three now the last secret
00:10
the last rule was maybe your favorite
00:12
right
00:13
no more grammar rules good news for you
00:16
but this one is probably the most
00:19
important rule this is really the
00:23
central key it's the main one and this
00:27
rule or this secret is this learn with
00:31
your ears not with your eyes again learn
00:37
with your ears not with your eyes and of
00:40
course we're teaching you how to speak
00:42
excellent English speak and to speak
00:47
well you have to have excellent
00:49
listening see speech comes from
00:52
listening here's the problem in school
00:58
you mostly learned with your eyes what
01:01
did you do you read a lot of textbooks
01:05
you watch the teacher write a lot of
01:07
stuff on the board
01:11
maybe you listen to the teacher explain
01:14
English in your language so you're less
01:17
you're hearing your language not English
01:19
in your classroom but in general what's
01:24
happening is you learning learning
01:26
learning with your eyes that's what
01:28
happened and maybe still happening now I
01:31
don't know hopefully not not after today
01:35
so there's a big problem of this see
01:37
when you're when you're just reading and
01:40
trying to learn grammar rules for
01:43
example by reading grammar books and
01:45
trying to learn vocabulary by reading
01:47
vocabulary lists and you're trying to
01:51
read English dialogues and then you're
01:54
doing written tests and then you're
01:57
doing all these written activities and
01:58
written drills none of that is helping
02:01
you with your speaking and that's why
02:05
you probably read English much better
02:08
than you speak it or understand it
02:13
it's a common problem it's because in
02:15
school you'll learn with your eyes all
02:17
the time or most of the time and you did
02:19
very little learning with your ears
02:22
listening listening listening is secret
02:27
number three and it's probably the most
02:28
important one you gotta listen a lot
02:31
you've got to listen to a lot a lot a
02:34
lot of English that's the key to great
02:38
speaking there's a lot of research about
02:41
this a lot of academic research
02:43
excellent research that shows that
02:45
listening is the way you improve your
02:48
speaking not reading not practicing
02:53
speaking in a mirror or something
02:55
no it's lots and lots and lots of
02:57
listening lots of it now this is so
03:04
obvious but let's think imagine a baby a
03:06
little baby little American baby we'll
03:09
say this little American baby of course
03:14
needs to learn English so how will we
03:16
teach this American baby to learn
03:18
English will we buy grammar books and
03:22
try to make the baby study grammar no we
03:28
won't we could try but it won't work
03:30
would we try to force the baby to read
03:34
immediately of course not
03:37
so how does this little baby learn
03:40
English one way and one way only
03:45
listening for six to twelve months that
03:49
baby just sits there and listens listens
03:53
listens listens listens listens to the
03:55
parents mostly and maybe brothers and
03:58
sisters and maybe other people in the
04:00
family speaking English constantly and
04:03
of course when parents speak to a baby
04:06
they don't speak difficult English they
04:08
speak very simple easy English and
04:11
eventually the baby starts to learn a
04:14
few words like mommy daddy maybe food
04:19
really simple stuff but they started to
04:22
learn a little bit and that's the
04:25
beginning and then they star
04:26
learning you know groups of words two
04:28
words three words together all of this
04:32
is happening through listening and for a
04:35
while the baby can understand a lot the
04:38
small child can actually understand a
04:40
lot of English but cannot speak very
04:43
much this is natural and normal that the
04:46
listening level is higher than the
04:48
speaking level and then eventually of
04:52
course the baby will start to speak one
04:54
word and two words in the beginning and
04:56
then phrase bigger set phrases and then
04:59
sentences and it just keeps going and
05:02
that baby learns to speak excellent
05:04
English through listening by learning
05:08
with the baby's ears and that's what you
05:12
have to do you have to go back and start
05:15
learning English now change the way
05:17
you're learning it and instead learn it
05:20
like a baby learn with your ears lots
05:23
and lots of listening now like a baby
05:28
you should not focus on difficult
05:32
listening this is another problem that
05:34
schools have and a lot of students have
05:36
maybe they do practice some listening
05:39
but when they do it's so difficult like
05:42
they're listening to sample TOEFL tests
05:44
and things like that extremely difficult
05:46
vocabulary very academic and formal not
05:50
really natural normal English for normal
05:53
situations and it's so difficult that
05:56
you cannot really understand it easily
05:59
and automatically if you do that if you
06:03
listen to English that's too difficult
06:04
your learning will be very very very
06:07
slow you want the opposite like a baby
06:11
you want to listen to lots of easy
06:13
English easy listening is the key
06:17
easy listening will give you great
06:20
speaking that's what all the research
06:23
shows is very powerful so you probably
06:27
need to be listening to things that are
06:29
much easier than you think here's my
06:31
basic rule for listening you should
06:34
listen to something that you can
06:36
understand 95% of it
06:40
without a dictionary 95% that means you
06:47
don't need a dictionary at all because
06:49
the other 5% you can easily guess right
06:52
if there is a new word or our new phrase
06:55
that comes you can guess the meaning
06:57
because you understand everything else
06:58
you understand the situation you
07:00
understand most of it so you can kind of
07:03
guess the meaning of that new word and
07:05
that's how you learn naturally new
07:08
vocabulary that's how I learned it all
07:10
as a child growing up and it's how you
07:13
should be learning it too with your ears
07:16
listening to very easy English now
07:20
eventually you listen and listen and
07:22
listen and you understand 100% well then
07:25
it's time for something a little more
07:28
difficult not a lot more difficult a
07:30
little more difficult and then you
07:32
listen to that again and again and again
07:34
when it becomes a hundred percent then
07:36
you find something a little more
07:37
difficult in this way you will rapidly
07:39
increase your ability here's what else
07:44
happens after six to twelve months it
07:48
depends on the person you will find
07:51
yourself starting to speak English
07:54
automatically correct phrases and words
07:58
will pop out of your mouth boom they'll
08:00
come out without you thinking at all
08:04
just like your language when you speak
08:06
your language you're not always thinking
08:08
about vocabulary and translations and
08:11
all this stuff
08:11
no it just comes out boom you what you
08:14
want to say something and it comes out
08:15
that's what will happen with English but
08:18
first you need to focus on listening and
08:21
just listening for six to twelve months
08:24
it's okay if you speak a little bit but
08:26
mostly you should be doing lots and lots
08:28
and lots of easy listening every day how
08:30
can you do this go get some easy
08:32
audiobooks easy audio articles you can
08:36
get my lessons you can get our lessons
08:40
and put them on an ipod and every moment
08:44
you have listen be listening listening
08:47
listening to this English all the time
08:48
when you wake up in the morning listen
08:50
to English you know just ten or fifteen
08:52
minutes when you
08:54
going to work her to school or you're at
08:57
home you know cleaning the house
08:58
whatever listen to English some more
09:00
twenty minutes thirty minutes when you
09:03
have a break during the day at lunch
09:05
listen to English 10-15 minutes when
09:08
you're going home at night or making
09:10
dinner listen to English ten fifteen
09:12
twenty thirty minutes before you go to
09:14
bed listen to English again ten fifteen
09:17
twenty thirty minutes
09:18
by doing little pieces of listening all
09:21
through the day you can easily listen
09:23
for a total of one to two hours every
09:27
single day and when you do that you will
09:31
find you will make big improvements and
09:35
it takes usually about six months maybe
09:38
less for you maybe more depends on how
09:40
much you listen depends on how easy it
09:42
is easier is better so that's it that
09:47
it's simple this is such a simple rule
09:50
learn with your ears not with your eyes
09:54
and one last note your listening ability
09:58
should naturally and always be higher
10:01
than your speaking ability see what
10:03
happens is your listening ability pulls
10:05
up your speaking ability it happens
10:08
automatically you don't need to think
10:09
about it it's easy all you have to focus
10:11
on is listening and as you get better
10:15
and better listening your speaking will
10:17
naturally improve it's like it pulls it
10:18
up pulls it up pulls it up pulls it up
10:21
now the only problem some people have is
10:24
psychological you might have stress and
10:26
nervousness and things like that that
10:29
cause you to have problems when it's
10:31
time to speak we'll talk about that
10:34
later in our courses we help you get rid
10:38
of nervousness so that's not a problem
10:40
anymore
10:41
but for this secret this rule all I want
10:44
you to do is focus on listening learn
10:46
with your ears not with your eyes simple
10:49
and easy very very powerful all right I
10:53
will see you tomorrow for our next
10:55
secret it's also a very good one and
10:58
very very powerful one remember this is
11:02
a whole system so you need to use all of
11:05
these all seven of these secrets
11:08
each one of them is powerful but when
11:10
you put them all together it's a super
11:13
powerful system that will give you
11:15
excellent English speaking alright I'll
11:19
see you tomorrow have a great day bye
11:21
bye
