今回は、次のリュックのセリフを見てみます。

男の話すアルベド語が分からないので、リュックが通訳してくれるシーンですね。

He said you can stay 

訳：ここに居てもいいってさ

if you make yourself useful.

訳：役に立ってくれるなら

you are usefulとyou make yourself usefulの違いは、状態と動作(変化)です。

前者が役に立つという状態や性質を表すのに対して、

後者は、意図的に行動して、(甲板でのびてた)役に立たない状態から、働いて役に立つ状態に変わったら、というニュアンスが出ます。

You areなんとか、とか、 I amなんとかばかりでなく、こういう表現も使えると、ネイティブ感がアップします！

他にも、That was close.やLet's get to work.など覚えておきたい表現がありますので、
