00:01
(exciting music)
00:02
- [Mark] Looking around, I became aware
00:03
of how surrounded we were by stingray.
00:06
One wrong step here could send me straight to the hospital.
00:11
(rushing water)
00:13
(intense music)
00:30
(gentle surf)
00:34
Waves crash as water rolls
00:36
onto a preserved expanse of coral reef.
00:39
The brilliant blues and white caps,
00:41
a signature of the vibrant ecosystem thriving below.
00:45
With this tropical landscape in front of us,
00:48
and the wind to our backs,
00:49
the crew and I set course for our next ocean adventure.
00:53
Welcome to Grand Cayman Island.
00:55
This 22-mile stretch of land,
00:57
located in the Caribbean Sea just south of Cuba,
00:59
is home to lush beaches, crystal clear waters,
01:03
and an abundance of marine life.
01:06
In fact, Grand Cayman is one of the most iconic locations
01:09
in the tropics to experience up-close encounters
01:13
with some of the world's most renowned aquatic creatures.
01:16
And today, that's exactly what we plan to do.
01:21
What's goin' on everybody?
01:22
I'm Mark Vins and welcome back
01:23
to another special adventure
01:25
brought to you by our friends at B&H Photo.
01:27
And today, we are just off the coast of Grand Cayman Island
01:30
at the world famous Stingray City Sandbar.
01:33
This site has drawn people from all over the globe
01:36
to get up-close and personal with,
01:37
you might have guessed it,
01:38
giant southern stingrays.
01:41
And these rays are absolutely huge.
01:42
You can already see 'em
01:43
off the sides of the boat in the water
01:44
and they are here in masses.
01:46
So, today, we actually are going to be testing out
01:50
the brand new GoPro HERO8.
01:52
This will be the first time we've ever used this camera
01:54
and we're super excited about it
01:55
because we use GoPros for just about every video
01:58
we've ever made.
02:00
Honestly, some of the best shots that exist on the channel,
02:03
were captured on a little camera just like this one,
02:07
except this one is brand new
02:09
and it's packed with all kinds of new features
02:11
that we're excited to test out.
02:14
All right, Shan, so we havin' calamari for lunch?
02:16
(Shan laughs)
02:17
- If you would like it, we can.
02:19
I think we're gonna give it
02:20
to all those stingrays out there, though.
02:21
- One pound of calamari.
02:22
That's what we're allowed to have out here.
02:24
It's gonna be what we're going to use
02:25
to track in the stingrays that are here
02:27
at the sandbar at Stingray City.
02:29
- Now, the proper way to feed a stingray.
02:31
Hold it in your hand just like this.
02:33
- Uh huh.
02:34
- You're gonna guide it
02:35
and they're gonna bring their nose right up to it
02:36
as they hunt by smell.
02:38
You're gonna open your hand nice and flat
02:42
and that suction is gonna suck it right up.
02:44
- Is there a chance you can get bit feeding stingrays?
02:46
- Ah, there is a chance you can get bit,
02:48
but they just have a couple plates.
02:50
- So mashers?
02:51
- That's exactly right.
02:52
So they're very, very powerful.
02:54
- The stingrays here are habituated for this activity.
02:57
This is not something you wanna just go do
02:59
at your local dive site or your local beach.
03:02
But if you do wanna get close to stingrays,
03:03
this is the place to do it.
03:05
We have our pound of squid cut
03:06
and now we're ready to go out there at the sandbar
03:09
and have some fun.
03:10
Okay, let's get our wetsuits on.
03:11
- Sounds good.
03:12
- Awesome.
03:14
- Now one thing I wanna mention about this site
03:15
is that we need to go barefoot
03:16
so I'm gonna take my wet boots off
03:18
because we wanna be able
03:19
to feel around the sand with our toes
03:21
and that's the best way
03:22
to keep from stepping on a stingray.
03:24
We wanna do a stingray shuffle
03:25
as we make our way to the sandbar
03:26
because one of the best ways to get stung out here
03:28
is to step on one.
03:30
We don't want that to happen today.
03:32
All right.
03:33
I think it's time to put on our mask
03:36
and get out there with the stingrays.
03:38
You guys ready?
03:39
- [Crew Man] I'm ready.
03:39
- All right, let's go.
03:42
Upon entering the warm Caribbean water,
03:44
the crew and I were immediately greeted
03:46
by several stingray.
03:47
I could already feel them brushing our feet
03:49
as we made our way to the shallows of the sandbar.
03:52
Oh my goodness, here they come.
03:54
The food has arrived.
03:56
And so have the rays.
03:57
- [Crew Man] Hold this end.
03:59
- I definitely made sure to shuffle my feet.
04:02
One wrong step here could quickly end this adventure
04:05
and send me straight to the hospital.
04:08
As soon as our boat arrived,
04:09
the stingray had their eyes on us.
04:11
They knew we would be giving them some tasty squid
04:14
that we were cutting back on the boat.
04:16
As I mentioned, these stingrays are habituated to humans,
04:19
from decades of fishermen gathering in these calm waters
04:22
to clean their daily catches.
04:24
After cleaning their fish,
04:25
they would then toss the remains and old bait overboard.
04:28
And the stingray and other marine life caught on to this
04:31
and began associating boats and humans with an easy meal,
04:34
which subsequently created this iconic location
04:37
known as Stingray City Sandbar.
04:39
Got my first piece of food.
04:41
Let's see if we can get a ray to come feed.
04:42
(water lapping)
04:52
(laughing)
04:52
Whoa.
04:53
Oh my goodness.
04:55
Wow, they are hungry, that is for sure.
04:59
As they continue to swarm the crew and I,
05:01
I had to keep reminding myself to shuffle my feet,
05:03
which is harder than it sounds
05:04
when you're being pushed around by waves
05:06
and almost tackled by hungry stingray.
05:09
Whoa, almost got my fingers in there.
05:13
That was a close one.
05:14
And even though we were completely surrounded,
05:17
they are actually very gentle creatures.
05:19
They're just hungry and looking for food.
05:22
They actually like to be pet right under the nose,
05:24
kinda like a puppy.
05:26
And if you put your closed fist
05:27
with a little bit of squid in it
05:28
right underneath them,
05:29
the stingray will actually follow your hand around.
05:33
To the touch, stingrays feel extremely soft,
05:36
and their skin is actually slick,
05:39
not at all rough like most sharks.
05:42
Oh, here we go.
05:43
(water lapping)
05:45
Whoa, did you see that?
05:47
Since the stingrays had settled down a bit,
05:49
I decided it was time to try something new,
05:51
something that I had never done before, hold a stingray.
05:55
I have a good feeling about this piece of squid.
05:58
This is gonna get the stingray we're after.
06:01
But I quickly learned that was much easier said than done.
06:04
I like that stingray.
06:06
That one's my 'vrit'.
06:08
This light gray stingray is actually a female.
06:10
I noticed her swimming around us the entire time.
06:12
And it seems, that because she's the most docile,
06:15
she'd be the best candidate to try to hold.
06:18
All right, here goes nothin'.
06:20
Attempt number one (gasps) nope.
06:25
All right, here is number two.
06:27
Ah, not even close.
06:30
All right, number three, eee, nope.
06:35
Okay, clearly this was just as difficult as I'd expected
06:39
although I'm not really sure what I expected at all,
06:41
holding a stingray isn't really something
06:43
you'd normally want to do.
06:45
But, and of course, as luck would have it,
06:48
it finally happened.
06:50
That's me holding a stingray.
06:51
It happened.
06:52
Look at this.
06:55
This will be the official stingray blue holder day.
06:59
This very gentle giant of the ocean.
07:02
- [Crew Man] Should you name her?
07:03
- We'll name that one Jenny.
07:05
And released.
07:07
To Dan, high five.
07:09
Whoo, all right, take a break from holding stingrays.
07:14
I just, Sig was getting footage.
07:16
Take like all the way back.
07:18
And Les you havin' fun?
07:19
You havin' fun, Cory?
07:20
- [Cory] I'm havin' fun.
07:21
(crew laughs) - All right, awesome.
07:24
That's what it's all about today.
07:25
We're out here havin' fun
07:26
with stingrays and the new GoPro HERO8.
07:30
The HERO8 is the latest in the line of GoPro cameras.
07:34
And it features some stand-out upgrades
07:35
from its predecessor,
07:36
including a total body redesign
07:39
with built-in mounting capabilities.
07:41
And a new side door for quick access to battery media
07:44
so you don't miss a second of the action.
07:47
And then lastly, there's the brand new hyper-smooth 2.0
07:51
for ultra-stabilized footage,
07:53
which, I have to say, I'm particularly excited about.
07:57
And, of course, before we left,
07:59
my new friend Jenny stopped by for one more visit,
08:02
you know, just to say goodbye.
08:04
You imagine, you know
08:05
when you get close to one of these stingrays,
08:07
this is something that I feel like everybody
08:09
who loves the ocean needs to come and do someday.
08:11
Wow what a gentle furry creature.
08:16
Who would have thought?
08:17
Southern Atlantic stingrays and human beings
08:19
co-existing out here like this.
08:21
This is so great.
08:22
All right, it's getting late in the day.
08:23
We gotta pack up and head home.
08:25
Whoo, oh man, that was crazy.
08:29
The Stingray City Sandbar
08:30
certainly did not disappoint today.
08:33
And you know what else didn't disappoint?
08:34
The brand new GoPro HERO8.
08:36
I have to say I am thoroughly impressed by this camera
08:39
and cannot wait to get home to check out the footage
08:41
that we captured from today's adventure.

for behind the scenes extras and exclusive episodes.
09:38
The most important thing about this camera
09:39
is the 4K 60p absolutely essential
09:42
when you're filming anything underwater
09:43
'cause that allows us
09:44
to slow down the footage ever so slightly
09:46
and it gets rid of the jitters and the shakes.
09:49
