paperwork
vibe (昨日もBrave Wildernessの動画で出てきましたね、こうやって偶然同じ単語に出会って覚えていくものです)
splurge
pedicab (pedが足、cabはタクシーなので、人力タクシー)

00:00
hello world the reason I came to the
00:03
Philippines was to see what everyday
00:05
life was like I had eleven days to do
00:08
this and after all my scheduling was
00:10
done I found myself with a few days
00:12
extra at the end of the trip what to do
00:15
with that free time why not some of the
00:19
things that people travel from all over
00:20
the world to experience in the
00:22
Philippines my basic criteria was
00:26
someplace that was easy to get to from
00:27
Manila and wouldn't take too much travel
00:29
time I only had three days so
00:31
unfortunately no long journeys for me I
00:33
ended up picking al Nieto because even
00:36
though I didn't want to go to well-known
00:37
- or spots in comparison to Metro Manila
00:40
it felt a lot more chill and with the
00:42
boat tours I'd be able to get out and
00:43
enjoy the water the normal backpacker
00:46
journey would probably take a flight to
00:47
puerto princesa and then spend anywhere
00:50
from five to nine hours on the van or
00:52
bus trip up there I didn't have that
00:54
kind of time so I booked a direct flight
00:55
with air swift the tickets costing
00:58
thirteen thousand five hundred and
00:59
eighteen PHP was a bit more than what a
01:01
minimum-wage worker would make in Metro
01:03
Manila in a month in USD this is like
01:06
two hundred and fifty dollars so nothing
01:07
extravagant I got lucky with my flight
01:10
because this is what happened to the
01:11
flight scheduled right before me
01:15
[Music]
01:17
well I didn't record any good audio but
01:20
basically the flight got cancelled and
01:21
people were none too happy while my
01:24
flight was delayed for about an hour or
01:25
so at least I got to board the plane the
01:28
one nice thing about going to a smaller
01:30
place like El Nido
01:31
was that I felt safe to walk around
01:32
freely without a guide with all my
01:34
camera gear on my first day I rented a
01:37
scooter for five hundred pesos no
01:39
paperwork needed and cruised around when
01:41
I got the nut bun beach I threw my drone
01:43
up in the air and captured some of the
01:44
lovely scenery before some clouds rolled
01:46
in many Filipinos asked me if I was
01:48
bringing my family and sadly no I didn't
01:51
because I was planning on interviewing
01:52
people around Manila most of the time
01:54
but if I could have taken them to this
01:56
area I know the kids would have loved
01:58
the beach over here it's a gorgeous
02:00
place even though I hadn't heard a lot
02:02
about this Beach it wasn't really
02:04
crowded at all well there are some
02:05
commercial establishments here you can
02:07
tell it still hasn't been overly
02:09
developed yet the other side of the
02:11
beach seemed like a working village and
02:13
if I flew my drone in just a little bit
02:15
you can see that these aren't resort
02:17
properties but where everyday people
02:19
live so the main strip of El Nido is
02:23
where in fact I have wooded stink I
02:24
chose to stay at a pattern breakfast
02:26
place about ten minutes away from the
02:28
center the noise over here was mainly
02:30
nature which I was totally fine with the
02:33
local government has recently made moves
02:35
to rehabilitate the beachfront which
02:37
includes an enforced three meter
02:38
beachfront easement essentially anything
02:41
within three meters of the beach needed
02:43
to be removed while good in theory the
02:46
implementation went ahead without plans
02:47
for things like roads so the road to the
02:50
area where I was staying
02:51
was removed and people had to drive
02:53
along the beach so technically they
02:55
rehabilitated it but you know I don't
02:58
think vehicles driving along the beach
03:00
was what they had in mind
03:01
I do believe they'll fix us eventually
03:03
and maybe they have already now I didn't
03:07
know this at the time but the seemingly
03:08
picturesque beachfront full of tour
03:10
boats was at one point polluted with too
03:12
much raw sewage
03:13
hi people counts meant swimming was not
03:15
allowed the government has been putting
03:17
measures into place to manage this which
03:19
is great to hear I read that they are
03:21
actually considering doing more to turn
03:23
this into an even nicer beachfront
03:27
the center of town is the most touristy
03:29
place I stopped by here to eat some
03:31
meals but otherwise avoided it if you're
03:34
a partier I suppose you'd have a good
03:35
time for me I preferred it one and a
03:38
half kilometers down the road at chrome
03:39
chrome Beach this was way more developed
03:42
than napkin Beach but not so busy with
03:44
boats like El Nido that you couldn't use
03:46
the beach for beach things like laying
03:47
around or swimming it could have been
03:49
the time of year I went but honestly
03:51
wasn't that busy there are open spaces
03:53
at restaurants and cafes and even some
03:55
speedy Wi-Fi that I could tap into to
03:57
finally talk to my family the best part
04:00
was the sunset which was more gorgeous
04:02
than what I can show you on camera while
04:11
I've read that El Nido was no longer the
04:12
backpackers paradise it used to be to me
04:14
it was not so overly developed that I
04:16
felt there were too many people although
04:18
I saw some developments leading up to
04:20
the beach so it's changing the real-time
04:24
that I could say yeah it would be nice
04:26
to be more secluded in El Nido was the
04:28
boat tours the regular group boat tours
04:31
brought you to what makes El Nido famous
04:32
the island hopping the scenery was
04:35
stunning but I can totally understand
04:39
how people who are able to experience
04:41
this in a small group would have a
04:42
different vibe than having over 100
04:44
people in the same area I'm told that
04:46
you can go on private tours that can
04:48
take you at different times so that you
04:49
can get to places when they're less
04:51
crowded if you have the money
04:52
I'd recommend doing that
04:54
in truth all the senior was so gorgeous
04:57
that I don't think it would have
04:58
mattered where they took me so I would
05:00
have preferred going to less popular
05:02
spots with my last day I splurged and
05:10
went scuba diving for the first time I'm
05:12
so glad I did this boat was not only
05:14
nice and had a toilet but it went to
05:16
spots that were less busy I was an
05:19
absolute beginner to diving and they
05:20
literally threw me into the deep end I
05:23
was quite surprised since I was
05:25
expecting I would have to take some
05:26
swinging pool training or do something
05:28
on a shallow beach a nope I was dropped
05:30
down into the ocean admittedly
05:32
it wasn't too far from shore or the boat
05:34
and I think it was only 5 meters down or
05:36
so at the start before being dropped in
05:39
my only training was what my instructor
05:40
shouted at me as we were cruising along
05:43
at full speed on the way to the diving
05:44
spot when I asked him to repeat his
05:47
instructions he was a bit Stern but
05:49
confident saying to pay attention when
05:50
you're underwater and don't worry he'll
05:52
show me what to do he wasn't wrong when
05:55
he dropped me down we had to do all our
05:57
communication visually I screwed up a
06:02
bunch of times but eventually I got it
06:04
well I think my wife would have freaked
06:06
out in this kind of situation I would
06:08
totally do it again this way what was
06:10
also good was that since I was a total
06:12
newbie all my scuba diving who was
06:14
one-on-one with my experienced guide I
06:16
felt quite safe
06:20
I would like to return again to el nido
06:23
but next time with my family
06:25
the B&B; iced tea that was so hospitable
06:27
as was the scuba diving crew if I can
06:30
afford it and maybe try some of the more
06:32
exclusive tours like multi-day island
06:34
hopping and capping are the ones where
06:36
you get a more secluded beach front with
06:38
a limited number of guests before I go I
06:42
thought it would be fun to talk about
06:44
the difference between being a tourist
06:45
and a local the fact is that unless you
06:48
know what locals pay and negotiate you
06:51
can pay a lot more money like a ride
06:53
that would cost a local ten pesos can be
06:55
100 for the tourist and if you're
06:58
getting off a flight from the nice
06:59
Airport there's no way to avoid jacked
07:01
up fees for transportation on the trikes
07:03
if I didn't have all my gear I totally
07:06
would have walked the five kilometers
07:07
are three miles in Metro Manila I
07:11
encountered this foreigner pricing as
07:12
well for example one day I was going to
07:15
meet a local to do a pedicab tour around
07:17
Intramuros a historical city area
07:20
unfortunately my friend couldn't make it
07:22
so when a driver approached me with the
07:25
official pricing which is 350 P per
07:28
half-hour I was a bit confused because I
07:30
told him that my local friend said it
07:32
would be 150 PT and what you know he
07:36
flipped it around and it was 150 P just
07:39
for me the local pricing I also he rode
07:41
like a local now looking back at the
07:43
footage and wait a sec while I hacked
07:45
this and enhance the image there we go
07:48
there's a notice that our pricing right
07:50
on the front of the pedicab 200 for
07:52
foreigners 150 for locals and as low as
07:55
50 for a student while I rode for the
07:58
local pricing I encountered another
07:59
issue the trip seemed like it would
08:01
never end after two hours when it was
08:04
finally over I was charged for two and a
08:06
half hours yeah somehow an extra half
08:08
hour miraculously appeared but of course
08:11
hearing a story about his family I gave
08:13
him a thousand pesos note and told him
08:15
no change necessary this is much better
08:18
than when I tried to catch a trike for a
08:19
30-minute ride from the UN station to
08:21
PNR pass a station in Metro Manila the
08:24
trike guys wanted to charge me two
08:25
thousand pesos which I flatly rejected
08:28
after 30 minutes of waiting I was
08:30
finally able to catch a grab which is
08:32
like uber and it cost me 238
08:34
whistles so the price went from about
08:39
$40 us to $5 us back in El Nido part of
08:43
my camera equipment broke and I needed
08:45
to get an allen key after searching
08:47
around with many shops I finally found
08:49
one that sold it and she brought this
08:51
out and I said I only need this one
08:53
actually but she said sorry you have to
08:55
buy the whole thing it's 130 pesos so I
08:58
said fine
08:59
so she went to the back go off the set
09:01
and when she came back she said it's 180
09:04
pesos and I thought hmm that's a little
09:07
bit weird how did the price jump 40
09:09
percent in 40 seconds so I just slid 130
09:13
pesos onto the counter and took the set
09:15
of keys she obviously took the money
09:17
what I know is happening is that they
09:20
see a foreigner and they know will pay
09:21
much more than locals I totally get why
09:24
they do it now the thing is I think
09:26
tourist pricing and local pricing is a
09:28
fair practice locals simply don't have
09:31
the wealth that tourists have and it's a
09:32
shame to price locals out of their own
09:34
communities and services my only wish
09:36
though would be that there was a more
09:37
transparent and structured way of doing
09:39
this it's just not a great feeling when
09:42
people are constantly trying to maximize
09:44
the amount of money they can extract
09:46
from you so I thought hmmm what is
09:49
something that other countries do to
09:52
make that tourism experience great for
09:54
both the locals and the tourists one
09:58
thing that I found out was a tourism tax
10:00
Japan actually kind of has this where
10:02
anyone over two years old exiting the
10:05
country regardless of nationality has to
10:07
pay one thousand yen which is like ten
10:09
u.s. dollars Edinboro has voted to enact
10:12
a different form of this where you pay
10:14
an extra tourist fee per night you stay
10:15
in the city
10:16
in fact El Nido does have something
10:18
similar it's called the ETD F or
10:21
ecotourism development fee this is
10:24
tacked on to island hopping tours and
10:26
costs 200 pesos the funds are earmarked
10:28
for protecting the environment improving
10:30
tourism and a mix of some other things
10:33
all in all I would gladly pay more money
10:36
to standardize some services and ensure
10:38
fairness whether it's consistent pricing
10:40
for transportation maintaining
10:42
infrastructure protecting the
10:43
environment and of course making sure
10:45
that locals are equally benefiting from
10:47
that sweet sweet tourism cash but now
10:51
that I think about it I don't know how a
10:52
tourist and tax would result in any type
10:55
of standardized pricing so I think I
10:57
should just throw that idea out the
10:59
window but what I do know is that I
11:01
would have had a lot more fun in the
11:04
Philippines if I wasn't constantly
11:06
trying to think about hey is this person
11:08
trying to grossly overcharge me because
11:11
on the one hand I feel like a bit of an
11:12
idiot and a bit violated if I'm being
11:15
charged a price that I don't think is
11:17
fair but on the other hand I feel like
11:19
an a-hole if I'm trying to not pay a
11:22
price that I can actually afford to so
11:25
this is the end of my series on the
11:27
Philippines a hard thing for me to
11:29
reconcile was the incredible income
11:30
inequality that I saw I was so much more
11:33
wealthy than the average Filipino it
11:35
honestly felt hard to relax when I knew
11:37
I was enjoying a lifestyle that so many
11:39
locals couldn't in making this video
11:41
series going to the Philippines and not
11:43
talking about the parts that aren't as
11:45
glamorous I just felt like I was doing a
11:46
disservice I'd be pretending everything
11:49
was great when in fact I experienced
11:50
many things that I struggled to
11:51
understand my feeling is that if you
11:54
really want to tell the story of a
11:55
people of a country you need to go and
11:57
experience what they do on the day to
11:59
day in my time there I barely scratched
12:02
the surface however perhaps everyone
12:04
would be happier if next time I skipped
12:06
the more complicated stories and simply
12:08
went to the nicest spots and enjoyed my
12:09
time again special thanks to all the
12:12
kind people that showed me around
12:13
I wrote a simple message asking for help
12:15
while in the Philippines and I got that
12:17
in spades
